KNOWING TAHURI, TRADITIONAL MUSIC MALUKU

The tone produced from Tahuri is actually not as easy as we just blow it, initially the shells must be perforated using a drill and blown repeatedly to get the desired tone. The tones on this instrument are first matched with the help of other musical instruments such as flute and pianika.

Formerly, Tahuri was used as a means of communication between communities to gather at the meeting hall or the local community used to call it Baileo. Interestingly, the amount of the Tahuri blow has its own meaning. Like, one blow of Tahuri indicates that there are people who have died.

Besides in Maluku, Tahuri is also known in several regions such as in Biak Regency, Papua. Just like in Maluku, here Tahuri is also commonly used as a tool to summon residents and occasionally used to accompany Papuan dances.
