In the past, the dreads of dreads were done individually. Each family that has a dreadlocked child holds their own Ruwatan. But since 2002, mass Ruuwatan was held.

Cutting dreads can be done at any time - not related to certain calculations or calendars. Cutting is done after the child wants to cut their dreads. Usually, the event of cutting dreads is done in June, July, until August to coincide with the school holiday period.

The practice of cutting dreadlocks done by yourself is not too complicated. Parents only need to hold a recitation program, fulfill requests from the child, and provide some offerings, especially tumpeng. Meanwhile, if done in bulk, the Ruwatan event will go through a long procession.

The series starts several days before ruwatan is done. The traditional elders will make a pilgrimage to places that are considered sacred and take water from seven sources of water in the Dieng Plateau. 21 pilgrimage sites, including seven springs. This procession can be done in one day or several days.

This pilgrimage aims to ask permission that the event to be carried out can run smoothly. In addition, at the same time pray that the Ruwatan event can bring blessings to the child, family, and the entire community of Dieng Plateau.

On the day of implementation, the series starts in the morning. Dreadlocked children who will be gathered gather at the house of the traditional elders. In each village on the Dieng Plateau, there is an indigenous elder. The customary elders who led the ruwatan mass event depended on the location of the ruwatan mass.

In addition to dreadlocks children, here also gathered escort women who brought various offerings of food or commonly referred to as domas. Art groups, as well as traditional elders. The group will then tour the village.

After going around the village, the procession will go to the Arjuna Temple Complex. The first place that was visited was Medium Sedayu. At the source of this spring, dreadlocked children will go through purification rituals known as penjamasan. After that, go to Dharmasala to tidy up their clothes. The program then continued to one of the temples in the Arjuna Temple Complex. In this temple, dreadlocks are cut.

Ruwatan held mass, besides being a tourist destination, it is also more to facilitate parents of dreadlocked children. Before being cut, dreadlocked children will ask for something to be obeyed. This request can be in the form of an object or another. At one point, there was a dreadlocked child who wanted his hair cut by an official. The existence of mass ruwatan held by the local government, can ease the burden on parents of such requests.

In addition, frequently asked requests also sound 'weird'. For example, there is a dreadlocked child who asks for two salted fish. Dieng people believe that the request is not the request of the child, but the request of other creatures who guard the dreadlocked child.

Dreadlocks that have been cut will then be dissolved in a water source in Dieng. The place that is usually used as a place of refuge is Telaga Warna, Telaga Balaikambang, or Sungai Serayu. After going through this procession, dreads in the child will not grow back. [Agung / Indonesia Rich]
