Ngaacik water in the old Kutai, philosophy to always "back to origin"
The history of Ing Martadipura Sultanate of Kutai Kartanegara cannot be separated from an area upstream of the Mahakam River, namely Jahitan Layar or Tepian Batu. Although the triumph of the Kutai Sultanate was reached when the capital had moved to Tangga Arung (Tenggarong), but the long story of the Sultanate which was more than 700 years old began in an area often referred to as the "Kutai Lama".
In this area, a legend about the appearance of two babies through two mysterious events originated. The baby Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti is told to appear suddenly in front of the house of a prominent Jaitan Layar community. The baby is lying on top of Batu Raga Mas with his right hand holding a chicken egg and his left hand holding a golden keris. It is said that the seven gods descended and gave instructions to the dignitaries that the child came from khayangan and had to be raised in a different way from ordinary human children.
The empress is said to also appear mysteriously from the bottom of the Mahakam River. The baby is lying on a gong upheld by a dragon that emerges from a whirlpool. The dragon then delivered Princess Karang Melenu to a high-ranking Hamlet leader who had raised the dragon. The official later became a foster parent who raised Princess Karang Melenu to adulthood.
Both of them will be named Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti and Putri Karang Melenu, the couple of the King and the first Empress of Kutai. These two figures became the forerunners of the lineage of the great family of the Ing Martadipura Kutai Kartanegara Palace.
Although the capital of the Kutai Sultanate then moved to Tenggarong, the family of the Kutai Sultanate still considered Kutai Lama the home and the origin of their ancestors. Because of that, every time before the implementation of Erau, there is a ritual called ngalak air in Kutai Lama. In this ritual, water from Kutai Lama is brought to the Kutai Palace to be used in various rituals during the implementation of Erau. This ritual also contains a philosophical message to always remember the origins of ancestors and maintain ancestral wisdom that has been inherited.
Ngalak air in Kutai Lama was carried out one or two days before the ceremony to erect the ayu pole which marked the start of Erau. In this ritual, each of the god's messengers (ritual servants) and belian (ritual servants) depart with the representatives of the Sultanate. The group left by water along the Mahakam River, using a speedboat. Together with this group, included the completeness of the ritual, among others, wija kuning rice, black sesame mixed with incense, fresh tepong water, burning charcoal, flowers, and several eggs.
The various fittings are used for performing the ritual of besawai and overlapping tigu (offering eggs) which is intended as a request for permission / tuah and notification to residents of the occult about the implementation of Erau. The rituals of besawai and anchoring wheat are done at several points, namely at the northern end of Kumala Island, Loa Gagak (Loa Kulu), Pamerangan (Jembayan), Tepian Aji (Samarinda Seberang), and Tepian Batu (Kutai Lama). At the last point (Edge of the Stone), the ship will rotate three times before doing besawai and anchor Tigu.
After the series of rituals was completed, representatives of the Sultanate took water with a special jar. This Kutai Lama water was brought back to Tenggarong and placed near Tiang Ayu in the Stinggil Room (Siti Hinggil), Kutai Palace. Every day, the contents of these jars will be added to the Mahakam River water taken from the dock in front of the Museum (Keraton) through the ritual of inviting water and deaf water turtles, to be used later in the Erau rituals. Along with the ritual of extending the dragon on the 6th day of the Erau implementation, the water in the jar was returned to its original source in Kutai Lama. [Ardee / Indonesia Rich]
