Owls Become Farmer Partners

This hunting ability is then used by farmers in some regions as pest control partners in their fields.

Each rice field has its own problem, so it requires different handling and exterminating partners. At present there are many farmers who use natural predators from each pest to save their fields or plantations.

For example, to eradicate planthopper pests, farmers use spiders, crickets, grasshoppers, and doves as predators. As for eradicating rat pests, farmers began to rely on owls or eagles as their natural predators.

In 2010, several areas in Klaten District, Central Java, had experienced almost harvest failures in their fields due to the attack of rat pests. In some paddy fields even mass eradication of rat pests has been held which involve many of its citizens.

The effort did not produce good results. Because rat pests are one type of animal that is fast to breed so that the next period will attack again. However, after the farmers began partnering with owls who became natural predators, the rat pest attacks began to decrease dramatically and affect the number of subsequent harvests.

The farmers in Klaten initially only had a few gupon or houses for owls in their fields. But along with the popular and effective method of eviction of these pests, the number of gupon and birds that become partners of farmers is also increasing. In fact, this method is widely followed in several other cities and regencies such as Sleman Regency, DIY.

Compared to eagles, these birds have now started to be increasingly used as partners by farmers in Klaten. Besides because eagles are more difficult to breed. The breeding of eagles is also less when compared to owls. In addition, according to some farmers, eagles also often damage huts and attack farmers' pets in their homes.

Owl Village

Owls, which are often used as partners to suppress mouse pests, are Tyto alba or Javanese rasp, which are known to eat rats. In a day, even a bird can eat up to 7 rats.

Tyto alba is quite easy to get. In Demak there is one village that is widely known because of the large number of birds that are breed there. In fact, because of the large number of birds being breed, Tlogoweru Village, Guntur District, Demak, Central Java has been known throughout Indonesia as the Owl Village.

To optimize the role of this bird as a pest exterminator, the local government needs to monitor the illegal fishing of the bird. The Village or Regency / City Government can issue a policy to ban illegal hunting of owls in the area.

The effort did not produce good results. Because rat pests are one type of animal that is fast to breed so that the next period will attack again. However, after the farmers began partnering with owls who became natural predators, the rat pest attacks began to decrease dramatically and affect the number of subsequent harvests.

Because in addition to being a partner of farmers in eradicating rat pests, they are also quite popular with ornamental birds lovers because of their exoticism.
