The Problem of Scarcity of White Starlings in Indonesia

IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nation ) has announced Critical Endangered or highly endangered status in white starlings . IUCN is a democratic membership union that contains more than 1,000 members of government and NGO organizations, as well as volunteer scientists totaling almost 11,000 people in more than 160 countries. The IUCN is in charge of helping the world find pragmatic solutions to the environment that are most urgent in every development challenge.

The Problem of Scarcity of White Starlings in Indonesia

Jalak Putih, an endangered Indonesian native bird

White starling is one of Indonesia's endemic birds. Its habitat is in Java, Bali and parts of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). White starlings live in pairs or in small groups living in tropical forest and lowland forests.

Based on observations, white starlings have three races, namely the Javanese and Madura races ( Sturnus melanopterus melanopterus ), transitional races at the tip of East Java ( Sturnus melanopterus tricolor ), and the Balinese island race ( Sturnus melanopterus tertius ). White starlings in the Javanese and Madurese races have milky white wing and back cover characteristics, while in the other two races the two parts are more gray in color.

Because of its beauty, it is not surprising that white starlings become identity fauna in two districts on Java, namely in Wonogiri District (Central Java) and Madiun District (East Java). But unfortunately, the presence of white starlings is now increasingly difficult to find in the wild.

You can still find white starlings in Jakarta, precisely in the Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve. It is estimated that the population of white starlings there is now only around 4-6. The population of white starlings is increasingly threatened with extinction due to the narrowing of their land in nature. In addition, this is also due to the high rate of poaching for the trade in white starlings on the market.

Efforts Can Be Done to Prevent the Extinction of White Starlings

On June 11, 2016, at Taman Safari Indonesia, Cisarua, the International Environment Week was held. The event released 40 white starlings into the wild, attended by the Minister of Environment, Siti Nurbaya Bakar. This program aims to restore and increase the population of white starlings in nature. However, programs like this alone are not enough to prevent the extinction of white starlings.

In order to preserve the sustainability of white starlings , conservation efforts must be carried out by the state, one of which is by entering this starling species into the list of rare birds protected by the Indonesian government through Law No. 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Resources and their Ecosystems, and PP No. 7 of 1999 concerning Utilization of Types of Plants and Wildlife. Protection by law is expected to help government efforts to reduce the rate of extinction of white starlings .

There are many other efforts that we can do. For lay people who are totally ignorant of bird conservation activities, getting to know bird species and their habitat can be a first step to then spread the spirit of conservation into the wider community. If everyone already knows the status of white starch extinction , protection efforts are no longer carried out by the government or by birdwatchers.

The role of the surrounding community is very important. Especially people who live near white starch habitat must be committed and participate together in guarding these endangered animals. Socialization to educational institutions is also important to be done so that it can introduce white starlings and build awareness of academics about the status of white starlings as one of the rare protected animals.
