Yellow-crested cockatoo birds are native to Indonesia that are endangered. This bird that has white fur with yellowish crested has been designated as a protected animal since 2007. The population of yellow crested parrots in the wild is less than 7,000.

This bird population is increasingly scarce due to habitat destruction and illegal fishing. This bird has been a favorite of bird lovers for a long time. The selling price on the market is very high. One yellow crested parrot at the animal market in Jakarta is sold starting at 4.5 million rupiah.

In May 2015, a case of smuggling yellow crested cockatoos was found in Tanjung Perak, Surabaya. Inside a passenger ship found 21 yellow crested parrots that would be smuggled by putting them in a bottle of used mineral water. The birds are sedated so as not to move and make a sound. Some of these birds finally died.

Yellow crested cockatoo is the most sought-after commodity on the local and international black market. On the international black market the price of 1 yellow crested cockatoo can reach 2,500 US dollars, equivalent to 32 million rupiah.

Catching a yellow crested cockatoo is increasingly prevalent. This was assessed because the punishment for the perpetrators was too light. Based on law number 5 of 1990 concerning biological natural resources, a person who intentionally captures, injures, maintains and sells cockatoos can be charged with a sentence of imprisonment for 5 years and a fine of 100 million rupiah.

Yellow crested parrot is a type of parrot that is tame and easily familiar with humans. In addition to beautiful feathers, the yellow crested cockatoo also has a loud voice that is liked by chirping mania. This bird can also mimic human voice.

Yellow-crested parrots are smart and very easy to train birds. The treatment is not difficult, the food is only grains, no wonder there are many bird fans who want to keep this bird. Unfortunately, many keep this bird in a cage. In fact, yellow crested cockatoos can only breed in the wild. This makes their population increasingly threatened.

Hopefully the Indonesian government will increasingly deal with the illegal trade in yellow crested parrots. The active role of the community is very much needed to maintain the survival of Indonesia's biological resources.
