Definition of History and Scope

History is science that studies events in the past that really happened and is closely related to events that occur in the present and future. The scope is of course related to the history of Indonesian culture starting from the prehistory to the present (modern).

While the notion of history can be interpreted as an investigation, knowledge obtained through research. Literally or literally, History comes from Arabic (Syajarotun) which means tree. And in Arabic itself, history is more popular with the word 'date' which means time or calendar. However, many argue that the most appropriate understanding of history refers to the word 'historia' which is Greek, and in English is called history.

Understanding History According to Scientists

1. Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon used the historical term at the end of the 16th century when he wrote about "natural history". According to him, historia is the knowledge of objects determined by space and time.

2. J.V Bryce

History is a record that has been thought of, said and done by humans

3. Patrick Gardiner

History is the study of what humans have done

4. Roeslan Abdul Ghani
Is a branch of science that examines and systematically investigates the entire development of society and humanity in the past along with events with the intention to then critically assess all the results of the research, to further serve as a treasury of guidelines for the assessment and determination of the current state and direction of future processes

5. Ibn Khaldun
According to Ms. Khaldun, history is defined as a record of the general human community or human civilization that occurs in the character / nature of society. (source: Wikipedia)

That is some understanding of history in language and general terms expressed by scientists. The scope of history referred to in this blog is closely related to Indonesian culture as I have described in all about historical blogs.

The following is the scope of Indonesian cultural history which is divided into several ages:
  1. Pre-historical era, since the beginning of human existence and culture until about the V century
  2. Ancient times, starting from the arrival of Hindu influences in the early centuries until the collapse of the Majapahit kingdom in the 15th century
  3. Middle Ages, since the arrival of religion and Islamic influence towards the end of the Majapahit era until the end of the 19th century
  4. New Age (Modern), since the entry of Western influence, and modern techniques in about 1900 until now

For each of the above points will be discussed in another post that is more specific on this historical blog.
